Murder accused ‘confessed’ to mother

- By WILMA RILEY newsdeskts@scotsman.com

The grandmother of a tragic toddler yesterday claimed that the girl’s mother confessed to killing her.

Noor Ahmed, 63, claimed in evidence that she heard her daughter-in-law Sadia Ahmed tell her that she had put 14-month-old Inaya to sleep for forever.

But defence QC Ian Duguid accused her of lying and said: “Sadia Ahmed never said that.”

Mrs Ahmed replied: “I’m not lying. I wouldn’t swear on the holy book and lie.”

She was giving evidence for a second day at the trial of Ahmed, 27, from Glasgow, who denies murdering her daughter, Inaya Ahmed, at 47 Bernisadale Drive, Glasgow.

The prosecution alleges that Anaya was assaulted by her mother on 17 April, 2016, and died in the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow, three days later.

The court heard that, in police statements given on 17 April and 4 May last year, Mrs Ahmed never mentioned anything about a confession.

In them she described Ahmed as a good mother.

The trial, which is taking place before judge Lord Matthews, continues.
