May I make a small correction to your interesting article “Royal Mile’s oldest pub finds oysters are its world” (17 October). William Dick, founder of the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies, lived in White Horse Close which is at the foot of the Royal Mile, where his father John Dick had a farrier’s forge.

William was born in 1793 and the family lived there from about 1791 to 1799 when they moved to “Tumbledust” (but that’s another story!). COLIN M WARWICK MBE Ulster Gardens, Edinburgh
