Tributes have been paid to a teenager who died after being struck by a vehicle on a busy road in rush hour traffic.

Megan Scott, from East Kilbride, was knocked down and killed at a pedestrian crossing in the South Lanarkshire town on Wednesday evening.

Police Scotland said the 15- year-old was crossing the A749 Kingsway near the Whirlies Roundabout at about 5: 45pm when she was struck by a black Volkswagen Scirocco.

Emergency services attended but Megan died at the scene. The 18- year- old driver was not injured.

Officers are investigating the circumstances of the crash and have appealed for any witnesses, as well as potential dash cam footage from drivers who were in the area.

Friends of the youngster took to social media yesterday to pay tribute to her.

Writing on Facebook, Jessica Smith said: “Rest in peace the beautiful Megan Scott. You were such a beautiful girl inside and out, did not deserve this at all. My hope sand prayers go out for your family and friends, rest in peace x.”

Another friend, Catherine Crichton, said the teenager’s sudden death should encourage others to live their lives to the full.

She said: “My thoughts and love go out to Megan’s family. Things like this happen all the time but I’ ve never took proper notice to it but when it hits home it makes you really think.

“I’ ve only recently got to know Megan and she was a beautiful girl that had her full life ahead of her. life is too short and you need to grasp ever y single opportunity you get and let the ones you love know how much you mean to them.

“There isn’t a rewind button or a switch to start again so you need to make ever y moment count, do what makes you happy and live like there is no tomorrow.”

Clare Turnbull, also writing on Facebook, wrote :“This just shows how quickly everything can be taken away from you, my whole heart goes out to everyone affected. Rest easy Megan Scott.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “An investigation into the circumstances is under way and officers from Motherwell road policing are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact them.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the divisional road policing unit in Motherwell via 101.
