Hundreds evacuated from depot after suspicious package found

- By ELLIE FORBES

Hundreds of workers were evacuated from an Amazon depot yesterday following the discovery of a suspicious package.

Emergency services rushed to the warehouse on Cloch Road at Faulds Park in Gourock, Inverclyde, after alarms were raised around 5:15am.

Police Scotland said that a cordon had been put in place around the building.

Staff are understood to have been evacuated from the depot, and others told not to travel to the site.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “At around 5:15am, police received a report of a suspicious package found at a depot in Gourock.

“Emergency services are in attendance and the premises have been evacuated as a precaution.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed that they were in attendance.

Police later confirmed that the suspicious package turned out to be “some sort of tracking device”.

Aspokeswomansaid:“police Scotland can confirm that the suspicious package sent to a depot in Gourock is not a viable device.

“It will be disassembled by EOD personnel and removed by police for further forensic examination.”

The incident comes weeks after it was announced that 1,000 temporary jobs would be created at Amazon in Gourock.

The employment surge announced earlier in October is to cope with the Christmas rush.

More than 1,000 seasonal workers will join around 400 permanent employees at the fulfilment centre to help pick, pack and ship customers’ festive season orders.
