Strong demand keeps prices steady at Stirling
Yesterday’s Stirling bull sales saw a steady, if unspectacular trade for the bulls forward, with a strong commercial demand underpinning trade.
Top price of the day in the Aberdeen Angus ring went to Linton Gilbertines President, the overall breed champion from the trustees of the late Gordon Brooke, Upper Huntlywood, Earlston Berwickshire which sold for 17,000 guineas to Gordon Gray, Selkirk and Caroline Orr, Dunfermline.
The junior champion, the 18-month-old Mccornick Destroyer from Martin Mccornick, Boreland, Newton Stewart went for the breed’s second top price of 11,000gns, selling to Andrew Ewing, Annan for export to Spain.
The intermediate champion, Logie Lawyer, from AJR Fastners, Netherleask, Ellon sold for 6,500gns to P Craword, Glenluce, while Retties Lancelot from R& C Rettie, Alexandra St, Devonside sold for the same price to J& W Arnott, Haymount, Kelso. Overall 37 bulls sold to an average of £5,063.
In the Limousin ring top price of the day went to Ronald Dick, Mins of Throsk, Stirling who saw his 18-month old Ronick Mckinley exchange hands for 11,000gns, going to the Walkers of Camregan, Girvan. The same herd also sold to 8,200gns, this time going to J& P Carr, Fallaw, Inverkeilour, while the breeds overall champion, also from the herd, went for 6,200gns to GT & S Coghill, Muce, Birsay.
A W Jenkinson, Clifton, Cumbria topped at 9,000gns, selling to W Nelson, West Brackly, Kinross while Anside Pedigree, Drummuir, Banff sold to 8,500gns to D Geddes, Netherton, Aberlour.
41 Limousin bulls sold to an average of £5,065, up £118 on the year for an 84 per cent clearance.
In the Beef Shorthorn rings the overall champion, a strong bull from Chris Mallaber’s Grovewood herd at Drakelaw, Burton on Trent took the day’s top price of 12,000gns, selling to Kincraigie Farms, Lumphunan, Aberdeenshire.
The reserve Shorthorn champion from DJ Biggar’s Chapelton herd in Castle Douglas sold for 9,000gns, going to Messrs Grieve, Aberdeenshire. Shorthorn bulls averaged £5121 while females averaged £2890.
The Cheeklaw Aberdeen Angus dispersal sale of David & Christine Lucas, Duns saw females meet a flying trade, selling to a top of 20,000gns twice with others selling to 15,000gns and 12,000gns. l Saturday’s sale of Blackface tups at Dalmally might not have broken records either – but this was only a reflection of the highs of the trade in recent years.
A consignment from Ian and Patsy Hunter’s Dalchirla flock sold to a top of £75,000 to Glenrath & Auldhouseburn, with others selling for £22,000 to Lurg & Dalwyne, £32,000 to Allanfauld, Troloss, Dyke & Harestone, £8000 to Mckenna & C Phillips, £5000 to Glenrath and £30,000 to High Staward.
