#BREXIT

Conservative MP and whip Chris Heaton-harris has written to universities asking for details on what they teach their students on Brexit. Heaton-harris said he believes in free speech in universities, but others are unhappy at the request. @thom_brooks said: “Let me make something clear. I will NOT be answering his request. We’re a university, not thought police.” @carlgardner added: “Academics are right to react so strongly. Heaton-harris is a public servant and should just try to make his policy work. Not hunt witches.” @Goodwinmj said: “I teach Brexit issues but if you think I’m handing over module material to thought police, you can take a walk. This is Britain not Soviet Union.”

#TOWNSEND

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has named his squad for next month’s rugby internationals against New Zealand, Australia and Samoa, including ten previously uncapped players. @joshgardner said: “Six of the new Scottish caps aren’t born in Scotland – presumably because Gregor Townsend just really enjoys winding up the RFU.” @erin_mcr001 added: “I don’t know how to feel about Townsend’s Scotland team. Some additions I’m delighted about whilst some of the omissions have me raging!” @Shamalamalamont was pleased with the announcement. He said: “Exciting squad. Very different. New names = better depth. Congrats to the new faces.”

#CHINA

China’s Communist Party has voted to enshrine Xi Jinping’s name and ideology as part of its constitution, elevating him to the level of founder Mao Zedong. The unanimous vote to incorporate “Xi Jinping Thought” took place at the end of the Communist Party congress. Xi has steadily increased his grip on power since becoming leader in 2012. @joshchin said: “Going by data, Xi Jinping’s clearest first term impact by far was in quashing dissent.” @ajplus added: “Deny Xiaoping is also written into the CCP’S constitution. It’s still debatable whether Xi has surpassed him in power/ influence or not.” @freevoice22 said: “It means they see Trump’s presidency as the perfect time to seize the global leadership.”
