I watched the Prime Minister’s report to Westminster with her update on Brexit, on TV on Monday. Ian Blackford of the SNP had a real go at her, stressing how important the single market and the customs union of the EU were for Scotland.

This is fair enough. However, talking of single markets, and customs unions, why does the SNP wish us to leave the UK version of these arrangements, which is far more important to us than the EU one? Once again, the SNP shoots itself in the foot! WILLIAM BALLANTINE

Dean Road Bo’ness, West Lothian I have been following the debate on Brexit and find it frequently frustrating, the stance of the Europeans suggesting very forcibly that there must be cash up front before any other negotiations can proceed. Various figures have been mentioned but as far as I’m aware no one has given any details as to how the figures are arrived at. The majority of us in the UK are used to politicians debating in the negative so I, for one, am perplexed when the way forward is so obvious. If the European Union were to provide a set of audited accounts for the time that Britain was in the EU an accurate figure can be put forward, thereby allowing sensible negotiations to take place.
