GORDON MURRAY LAUNCHES CAR BUILDING FIRM

Legendary car designer Gordon Murray is to launch his own car manufacturing business.

The man behind the iconic Mclaren F1 has announced that his new business – Gordon Murray Automotive – will focus on low-volume production based on his own istream manufacturing process.

Murray said that the company will buck the trend of modern cars becoming increasingly complicated and heavy and return to the principles of some of his most famous designs.

A quarter of a century after the Mclaren F1 first appeared on our roads, Murray said his new venture’s first vehicle would be a spiritual successor to the legendary supercar.

“The new manufacturing business significantly expands the capabilities of our group of companies,” explained Professor Murray. “With our first new car, we will demonstrate a return to the design and engineering principles that have made the Mclaren F1 such an icon.”

The f1 was a revelation when it was launched in 1992. it used high-tech materials such as carbon fibre, kevlar and titanium and featured a Bmw sourced 620bhp 6.1-litre v12 to meet Murray’s desire to build a lightweight, high-power “ultimate road car ”. it held the record as the fastest production car for seven years after hitting 240.1mph.

Gordon Murray Automotive will sit as a sister brand to Gordon Murray Design, the firm responsible for the T25 city car concept and the OX flat-pack truck.

Murray’s istream production system aims to use Formula 1-style technology and materials to offer a cheaper, more efficient way of building cars centred on lightweight, durable components. The philosophy is that if a car is lighter its drivetrain can be smaller andw lighter, it will be more economical and cleaner and there will be less wear and tear, extending its life and reducing running and repair costs.
