The ANZAC legend: Mounted troops visit hallowed ground in Australian history

Israeli children welcome members of the Australian Light Horse associatio­n yesterday near Beer-sheva on the northern Israeli desert.

The servicemen had arrived for a re-enactment of the historical fight of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) mounted division that helped capture the area fromtheott­omanempire­during the First World War.

Hundreds of Australian­s arrived in Israel for a weeklong visit to participat­e in the 100-year anniversar­y marking the decisive victory of the British Army and ANZAC forces in the Battle of Beer Sheva, which resulted in the city’s conquest.
