Patience a virtue as gritty Heriot’s frustrate Currie

Glasgow Hawks captain Brendan Mcgroarty praised his side’s “dogged determination” after a late comeback gave them a crucial BT Premiership victory at Meggetland, writes Gary Heatly.

When Jordan Edmunds, the Boroughmuir winger, crashed over for his second try of the day in the 76th minute it looked like the hosts would come out on top.

However, in a frantic last few minutes, the hosts’ skipper Johnny Matthews was yellow carded and Hawks bagged tries through backrow Callum Kerr and hooker Grant Stewart to win 31-24.

Muir picked up two bonus points, but it was little consolation having seen victory snatched away from their grasp. After the bonus-point win, centre Mcgroarty said: “At times we struggled to get things going, but the guys hung in and determination got us over the line. It wasn’t pretty, but it shows the character in the group and now we can kick on in the second half of the campaign.”

The hosts started well and they got the opening try after five minutes, Edmunds going over.

Hawks got on the board with a Ross Thompson penalty after 17 minutes, but four minutes later the home side scored their second try through hooker Matthews.

The visitors had some good pressure leading up to the interval and it led to the home side’s full-back Ciaran Whyte being sin-binned.

Hawks took advantage to get their first try of the match, Kerr going over for the converted score to make it 12-10 at the interval.

Boroughmuir had quite a bit of possession in the opening stages of the second period and eventually try No 3 came, the man scoring it was Whyte in the 58th minute.

With 11 minutes to go Hawks levelled things up with a converted try by scrum-half Paddy Boyer before Muir went 24-17 up and then the crazy finish came.

For Hawks, centre Mark New and Kerr impressed in tough conditions, while Edmunds once again showed his quality for the hosts, simply one of the best finishers in the top flight.
