Expense ‘the biggest barrier to eating healthy’

People in Scotland perceive one of the biggest barriers to eating healthily to be price, with 47 per cent of people saying they believe it is too expensive to eat healthily, according to an annual consumer survey by Food Standards Scotland.

Almost two-thirds of people in Scotland say are concerned about having an unhealthy diet – a rise of 15 percentage points since December 2015 when Food Standards Scotland began measuring knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards food.

The survey also shows that people in Scotland perceive one of the biggest barriers to eating healthily to be price, with 77 per cent concerned about food prices generally, while around half of the public believe it is too expensive to eat healthily.

Heather Peace, head of public health nutrition at Food Standards Scotland said: “It’s clear that moving towards a healthier diet is more important than ever in Scotland.”
