New tunnel into Israel sparks flare up on border
The Israeli military discovered and detonated a militant tunnel yesterday that was dug from Gaza into Israel in a rare flareup along the tense border that has remained largely quiet since 2014.
Military spokesman Lt Col Jonathan Conricus said the “active tunnel” that was still being dug was discovered thanks to ground breaking technology. Forces subsequently blew it up inside Israeli territory.
Lt Col Conricus said military intelligence had been tracking it for some time. He called it a “grave and unacceptable violation of Israeli sovereignty” and that Israel holds Hamas responsible for the breach of its territory.
During the 2014 war, Hamas militants on several occasions made their way into Israel through a tunnel network that caught Israel off guard.
