- By GARY HEATLY

Scotland women’s cricket captain Abbi Aitken has decided to step down from the role after eight years at the helm.

Now 26, she took over the role as a teenager and has led the side with distinction since then as the standard of women’s cricket in this country has improved.

Aitken will continue to play for the team and is hoping to add to her 135 caps.

“I feel I’m at a stage in my journey where it’s time to concentrate on my own game and show what I can offer the team solely as a player,” she said. “In order for me to give that my best shot it’s time to pass on the armband. I am extremely proud to be Scottish and to have had the opportunity to represent my country as captain for the length of time that I did will undoubtedly remain my proudest achievement.”
