Former Labour frontbencher suspended following ‘ allegations’
Lab our MP Kelvin Hopkins has been suspended from the par t y “on the basis of allegations received”, a party spokesman said.
The f or mer f r ont b e nche r, who represents Luton North, has had the whip withdrawn while an investigation into the claims is carried out.
Last night, Labour insisted it takes complaints “extremely seriously” and has “robust” systems in place to deal with them.
The spokesman said: “On the basis of allegations received by the Labour Party today, Kelvin Hopkins has been suspended from party membership, and t herefore t he Lab our whip, while an investigation takes place.
“The Labour Party takes all such complaints extremely seriously and has robust procedures in place to deal with them.”
Mr Hopkins was one of 36 Labour MPS to nominate Jeremy Corbyn as a candidate in the Labour leadership election of 2015, and during the EU referendum in 2016, he was one of the chief Labour figures to support the “Leave” campaign.
His suspension comes the day after the UK Defence Secretary, Sir Michael Fall on, stood down amid a growing scandal over Westminster’ s sexual harassment culture.
