Flounderin­g Everton crash out of Europe

Managerles­s Everton crashed out of the Europa League with two Group E games left to play.

The 3- 0 defeat, Everton’s fifth in a row in all competitio­ns, combined with Atalanta’s 1- 1 draw at A poll on Li mas sol, means the rock- bottom Toffees cannot reach the last 32.

Lyon exerted early pressure and Jordan Pickford made a fine double save, parrying Bertrand Traore’s header and blocking a follow- up effort by Nabil Fekir, who then sent a shot over the bar.

Mason Holgate was fortunate not to score an own goal when he diver ted a Maxwel Cornet cross into the arms of Pick ford, who then pushed away a Memphis Depay freekick, before the game was halted for several minutes as Cuco Mar tina received treatment having fallen awkwardly.

Re plays indicated he may have been knocked out and he was stretchere­d off, with Muhamed Be sic coming on at right-back. Ever ton later announced Martina was being kept in hospital overnight for observatio­n.

After the break, the game ran away from Everton entirely.

First Traore burst for ward and slotted past Pickford in the 68th minute. Then, eight minutes later, Pickford blocked a Marian o Diaz effort but was then beaten by as hot from Houssem Aouar, who was set up by Depay.

Following the 80th- minute dismissal of Morgan Schneiderl­in for a second yellow card, Depay completed the scoring with a header two minutes from time.
