THE CASUALTY LIST
The sexual harassment scandal has led to the resignation or suspension of several figures:
● Sir Michael Fallon: The veteran Conservative quit as defence secretary following allegations of inappropriate behaviour and acknowledged he had “fallen below the high standards required” of the role. He stepped down after it emerged he had repeatedly put his hand on a journalist’s knee during a party conference dinner in 2002. It was later alleged he had tried to kiss a junior reporter at a 2003 lunch.
● Carl Sargeant: He said he had resigned as cabinet secretary for communities and children in the Welsh Government following allegations about his personal conduct. A spokesman for First Minister Carwyn Jones said Mr Sargeant had been “removed” from the Cabinet. Mr Sargeant said he wanted an independent investigation.
● Kelvin Hopkins: The suspended Labour MP said he “categorically” denied allegations of inappropriate conduct made by party activist Ava Etemadzadeh. Claims the MP sent her suggestive texts and acted inappropriately are being investigated by Labour.
● Charlie Elphicke: The Conservative Party whip has been suspended, with Tory chief whip Julian Smith saying it followed “serious allegations that have been referred to the police”. Mr Elphicke denies any wrongdoing.
● Mark Mcdonald: The SNP minister for childcare and early years in the Scottish Government resigned over past actions he said had been “considered to be inappropriate”.
