Marr bounce back with terrific win over Hawks

MARR 31 15

Following back-to-back losses to Ayr and Currie, Marr Coach Craig Redpath was delighted to see his men start to re-establish Fortress Fullarton with this excellent bonus-point win, writes Matt Vallance.

“We reduced our error count, fed off our marvellous support and put in an amazing defensive effort, then showed a wee bit of class when the chances came. The boys will enjoy the rest now,” Redpath said.

Hawks director of rugby Kenny Hamilton could only say: “We were well-beaten by a better team, congratulations to Marr.”

Afterbrendanmcgroarty’s opening try in 29 seconds, Marr had to endure 20 torrid minutes, including conceding a second try to Kyle Rowe, with Ross Thompson converting and adding a penalty to put the visitors 15-3 ahead, before a moment of magic from scrum-half Kaleem Barreto got the home side going.

Stand-off Craig Kolarik added a second try, Dougie Steele converted both and also kicked a penalty, to put Marr 17-15 ahead at the break.

Hawks’ efforts to get back foundered on superb Marr defence in the second-half, while, when the chances came up, Barreto and Conor Bickerstaff, on the interception, took them. Steele goaled both tries and Marr were home and hosed after a good win in a great game.
