Guarding freedom of speech: Memorial to British writer George Orwell unveiled at BBC headquarters

A bronze statue has been erected at Broadcasting House in London to honour writer George Orwell, who worked for the BBC . It’s said Orwell – whose real name was Eric Arthur Blair – based the torture chamber Room 101 in his novel Nineteen Eighty-four on a studio in the building. His adopted son Richard Blair, far right, joined BBC director-general Tony Hall, sculptor Martin Jennings and Baroness Whitaker to unveil the memorial, which depicts the notoriously heavy smoker who died from TB with cigarette in hand.
