#CARLSARGEANT

Former Welsh government minister Carl Sargeant died just days after being sacked from his role and suspended from the Labour Party over allegations about his personal conduct. His family said they were “devastated beyond words” at his loss. @jeremycorbyn said: “I’m deeply shocked to hear of the terrible news about Carl Sargeant. My thoughts and profound sympathy are with his family and friends.” @tom_watson added: “My thoughts and prayers are with Carl Sargeant’s family right now. They have asked for privacy. I hope the media respect their wishes.” @Amanwy posted: “Carl was a rare Cabinet Minister to achieve office without going to university and use the levers to fight for what he believed in...” @Simonthomasac declared: “Immense sadness in the Assembly today after we lost one of our most vibrant characters. Cruel, cruel day for Carl’s family and friends.”

#GUNCONTROL

Donald Trump was not backing down on his reticence to tighten US gun control laws in the wake of Sunday’s mass shooting at a Texas church that killed at least 26 people. The US president said more controls would have prevented another citizen with a gun from taking down the Texas shooter. @Carolincnbc said: “Donald Trump getting annoyed by gun questions again. Is there ever a good time to discuss it?” @g_hoffon787 added: “Americans wake the hell up, stop this, we need a gun law that will work and send a message to Trump, no more guns on our streets.”

#DAVIDMOYES

David Moyes declared he had a point to prove after being named as the replacement for Slaven Bilic as West Ham manager. The appointment of the former Everton boss met with a mixed reaction given unsuccessful stints elsewhere, including at Sunderland. @philmcnulty mentioned: “Moyes signed contract at Man Utd until 2019. In that time he’s managed them, Real Sociedad, Sunderland &nowwestham–witha year left.” @Snazzyredhead said: “I think you will find a large percentage of us are angry, sacked from previous three jobs and relegated Sunderland last season. Backwards move!”
