England lose five to injury

-

Dundee United are expected to announce the appointment of Csaba Laszlo as their new manager today.

The Ladbrokes Championship club have called a noon media conference where the former Hearts boss is set to be introduced.

United sacked Ray Mckinnon after two consecutive defeats but have since collected six points from two matches under caretaker Laurie Ellis, with Saturday’s victory over St Mirren taking them level on points with the league leaders.

Laszlo was named Scottish Football Writers’ manager of the year in 2009 after leading Vladimir Romanov’s Hearts to a third-placed finish under difficult circumstances before losing his job midway through the following season.

The 53-year-old Hungarian subsequently managed Charleroi, Lithuania and MTK Budapest before spending last season in Slovakia, where he took Dunajska Streda from relegation candidates to Europa League contenders.

The likes of John Hughes, Jim Mcintyre and St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright were also linked with the post.

Laszlo’s first game will be against Irish side Crusaders in the Irn-bru Cup quarter-final on Saturday. England’s preparations for back-to-back friendly matches against Germany and Brazil have been hit by injuries to five players, including Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.

Sterling and his Manchester City team-mate, Fabian Delph, withdrew from contention because of back and calf problems, respectively.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson pulled out because of a thigh injury.

Tottenham players Kane and Harry Winks withdrew on Monday.
