Limited-run BMW M3 CS brings more power and tech
BMW has upped the performance of the M3 super saloon with a new CS model. It now makes 454bhp and gets new high-performance equipment upgrades. Under the bonnet sits the same 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine found in the standard car, but power has been increased by 10bhp over the M3 Competition Package. This results in a 0-60mph time that’s a fraction faster at 3.7 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 174mph. BMW says that the suspension is largely similar to the Competition Package model, with aluminium components that reduce weight. However, the control systems for the adaptive suspension and stability control have been adjusted to give a sportier characteristic. Subtle power hike and revised suspension electrics aside, CS model upgrades are more apparent on the exterior. Up front there are large, three-section air intakes and a prominent front apron, while the split rear spoiler gives off a particularly aggressive appearance. Like the bonnet and roof, these parts are made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic to reduce weight. The lightweight alloys – 19-inch at the front, 20-inch at the back – come with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres as standard. These semi-slick track-focused tyres signal the CS’S intent as more than just a ballistic road car. Inside, the sports seats are upholstered in two-tone leather and Alcantara, while a Harman Kardon surround sound system also comes as standard. BMW M3 CS order books open in January, with production of the 1,200-run special edition due to begin in March.
