Ages of Wonder: Scotland’s Art 1540 to Now
The Royal Scottish Academy was founded in 1826 by our artists and it has always been run by them, but the exhibition Ages of Wonder, which celebrates its long history, shows how its ambitions were much wider than to promote the narrow self-interest of one professional group. It’s main purpose was to be an exhibiting society, but it was also a teaching organisation and, long before the National Gallery, it started the national collection. ■ Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, until 7 January, 0131-624 6200.
