Hard-fought victory puts Grange on top

- By CRAIG MADDEN

Grange retook the lead in the National League with an anticipated victory over Inverleith but the 4-2 win was by no means oneway traffic and Inverleith showed enough to suggest they may avoid relegation come the end of the season.

Grange now hold a threepoint lead over Kelburne after the first nine games.

Grove Menzieshill retain third spot after their narrow 2-1 win over Hillhead. Grove established a 2-0 lead after the break thanks to a penalty corner by Gavin Byers and an openplay goal by Paul Martin. Callum Duke scored a penalty for Hillhead.

Edinburgh University moved up to fifth in the table as a result of their 3-0 win over Western Wildcats. Dave Mawhinney, Simon Balschke and Kevin Wong were their scorers, but injuries in particular have made things difficult for Western after an impressive start to the season. Dundee Wanderers moved up to sixth courtesy of their narrow win over Clydesdale. Bobby Ralph was most influential with a hat-trick and Fergus Sandison, a firm fixture in the team since his debut, grabbed the other goal.

Edinburgh University march on at the top of the women’s league with their eighth win in nine games. Western Wildcats looked to be serious challengers in the early part of the season but have slipped somewhat in recent weeks. Nevertheless the 1-0 scoreline is a clear indication that Wildcats can break back into the top four. Edinburgh were grateful to Hanna Mckie for that solitary goal.

Clydesdale Western established a two-goal lead over Wanderers at Dalnacraig through Heather Howie and Millie Brown before Emily Dark brought the Dundee side back into the game.

But Western retained their advantage and move on to 20 points along with Grove, but with an inferior goal difference.

Grove beat Hillhead 7-0, with Sarah Jamieson and Katie Robertson both netting twice.
