Arrogant men

Boris Johnson’s actions have left Nazanin Zaghari-ratcliffe facing a further five years in an Iranian prison on charges of espionage.

Johnson styles himself as the enfant-terrible of the Conservative Party. His famed outbursts, however, have nothing to do with unorthodoxy or “plain speaking”. Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, as he is more properly known, epitomises the class arrogance and social privilege of Britain’s upper-middle class.

His Tory colleague, Michael Gove, seemed more interested in saving Johnson’s career than he was in clarifying that Nazanin Zaghari-ratcliffe was on holiday in Iran.

This shows the utter arrogance and contempt this preposterous duo hold for the voters. It should be remembered it was Gove who knifed Johnson in the last Tory leadership contest.

Gove clearly knows a leadership election is coming and wants to position himself favourably with Johnson. It shows the Tory mind-set that pursuit of power trumps morality every time. I cannot recall a cabinet in which so many personalities were flawed and deserved the sack. The question which all but the zealots are asking is: Does any of Theresa May’s cabinet not deserve the sack? So why can’t they be sacked? It’s because the Brexiteers are sticking together – they know that the cause teeters and falls if one of them goes. So black is now white. Mr Gove prefers not to know if the lady imprisoned in Iran had been damned by Mr Johnson’s error.

If this is the example of hardheartedness overruling wisdom, then unless we stand up to these people, they won’t care how hard Brexit is. Some voters who voted Leave may ask themselves if they were misled by a buffoon.

Our Scottish Tory MPS know that Scotland is more opposed to Brexit than ever. We expect our MPS to stand up for amendments to the Brexit bill. We can’t have the Brexiteer tail wagging the Parliamentary dog. All Michael Gove was very careful to say was that he didn’t know the purpose of the visit of Mrs Z ag harir at cliff etoir an–fact–and he was quite prepared to accept her husband’s claim it was a holiday - correct and proper, as a Government spokesperson.
