When James Mcpake’s kneecap practicall­y split in two during the New Year derby in 2016, very few gave him any chance of recovering. However, after nearly two years of extensive and intensive rehab and surgery, Mcpake rejoined firstteam training this week.

Although he has a reputation for being a tad error-prone and reckless and he’s still some way away from being match fit, there’s no doubt our defence functioned best with him at its heart. His eventual return will be as welcome for the squad as it will be emotional for the player, who has been supported by the club throughout his recovery and will be keen to repay that faith. Given our recent woes up front, a small part of me wonders whether allowing him to relive his youth by playing as a striker is worth a go...
