British man tells lawyers of torture by Indian police

- By HILARY DUNCANSON

A British man arrested in India and said by campaigners to have been tortured by police has been returned to police custody following a court hearing, it has been claimed.

The Sikh Federation UK said Jagtar Singh Johal was in judicial custody after appearing in court, sparking hopes the “physical torture” will come to an end.

Mr Johal, from Dumbarton in West Dunbartonshire, was detained in Jalandhar on November 4.

The federation said no official charges had been brought against him, but it had been reported that Mr Johal’s arrest was linked to the killing of Hindu leaders in Punjab.

Mr Johal, 30, who got married in India last month, has told lawyers he has been tortured with “body separation techniques and electrocution to body parts”.
