O chionn 80 bliadhna – on Weekly Scotsman, 6 Samhain 1937
Mr Angus Henderson, a wellknown Gaelic journalist and writer on Highland affairs, died suddendly at his homw in St Vincent Crescent, Glasgow, on Monday.
A typical Highlander, tall and well built, he was a familiar figure at Highland functions for the best part of half a century. Steeped in the lore of the Highlands and Islands, he wrote with an intimate knowledge of his subject.
Born in Ardnamurchan, about 70 years ago, of farming stock, he studied for some time at Glasgow University. From early manhood he specialised as a freelance journalist to Gaelic and Highland affairs, and was a valued contributor to numerous journals and periodicals throughout the country. He was responsible for the ‘Highland Horoscope’ in the Weekly Scotsman for a period of 11 years, and shortly before his death he completed his final article.
An intimate friend of the late Calum Macfarlane of Elderslie, the Bard, he was one of that small minority efficient in the writing of Gaelic in shorthand. He employed the system devised by Macfarlane.
For some 20 years he lived in Stirling, and during those years he was associated with the late Aeneas Mackay in the publication of “The Highland Clearance”. In his younger days he wrote historical and romantic fiction.
Mr Henderson is survived by this wife. There was no family.
His brother, the late Rev Duncan Henderson, held an assistantship in a Presbyterian charge prior to settling in America.
