Brexit borders
In her piece regarding the problems Brexit creates for cross-border trade in Ireland (Scotsman, November 27) Lesley Riddoch seems to assume it is up to the UK to find an answer either by setting out special arrangements now or remaining in the European single market and custom union.
I find it difficult to see how any specific arrangements can be devised until the overall position on post-brexit trade with the EU is broadly settled.
As regards retaining current trading relations with the EU, I think that would be attractive to the UK but the EU insists it is possible only if certain political conditions, principally free movement and the primacy of the European Court of Justice are met.
As it is really the EU that is creating the difficulties I suggest the UK do nothing meantime and await developments.
I think, too, it might be borne in mind by all parties that the Republic of Ireland has enjoyed, since its inception, unique privileges in its relations with the UK, for instance in the movement of people.
