Coming soon: sequel to an art deco classic

-

Glencairn Properties has submitted a planning application for a residential development on the site of the former art deco cinema building on Great Junction Street in Edinburgh’s Leith area.

Plans include 36 residential properties – a mix of three-bedroomed family apartments, one and two-bedroomed flats with a further nine allocated for affordable housing.

The developer has prioritised retaining and refurbishing the existing derelict Grade B-listed former State Cinema building.

An unsightly warehouse building to the rear will be demolished to pave way for a contemporary extension creating a five-storey residential building.

With a dual aspect giving views to the south and north-east, the proposed development will feature horizontal balconies, which will cantilever out and gently follow the curve of the Water of Leith and are designed to provide excellent views across the river, Coalie Park and towards to the Shore.

The plans are designed to be sympathetic with the existing architectural style of the surrounding buildings and to reflect Leith’s industrial heritage
