The top ten Scottish food and drink brands have been revealed today, with Irn-bru leading the pack.

The Scottish Brand Review 2017 compiled by Kantar Worldpanel ranked what is known as Scotland’s other national drink in the top spot.

Its Cumbernauld-based parent company AG Barr in September reported that it had more than doubled the pace of the soft drinks market’s growth in its first trading half, but said the post-brexit vote weakness of sterling hit input costs. In the six months to 29 July it saw a near-9 per cent rise in revenues to £136.6 million, which was praised by the City, against a UK soft drinks market up 4.2 per cent in the period. The firm also hailed the launch of Irn-bru extra.

Meanwhile, Graham’s The Family Dairy retained its silver ranking. The Bridge of Allan-based firm came ahead of Malcolm Allan in third place, then Baxters, Bell’s Pastry Products, Mcintosh, Tunnock’s, Wiseman, Mclelland Seriously and Mackies. And it said it was pleased to maintain its position as number one

0 Graham’s said 2017 has been a ‘bright and busy year for the business’ Scottish dairy brand for the third year running, number one Scottish food brand title, and number two food and drink brand overall for a second year, “beating off competition from the likes of Wiseman, Tunnock’s and Mackie’s”.

Graham’s said 2017 has been a “busy” year for the company, with the launch of products Protein 22 and Organic Semiskimmed Milk with Cream at the Top, to multiple listings across the UK.

The business, along with housebuilder Mactaggart & Mickel, also noted that it is awaiting a decision from the Scottish Government on their proposed 600-home housing development that would enable investment in a national dairy production, research and education facility in Stirling. “This would represent the single biggest investment in Scotland’s dairy sector in 30 years and allow them to maximise R&D and innovation,” Graham’s said.

Carol Graham, marketing director at Graham’s The Family Dairy, said 2017 “has been a bright and busy year for the business and to remain the number one Scottish food and dairy brand, as well as the number two Scottish food and drink brand overall is something the whole business is celebrating.

“As a family business, we are devoted to delivering highquality, brilliant-tasting locally produced products, working in partnership with over 100 farmers, and we hope to continue to help the Scottish dairy industry thrive.”

Kantar issued a separate ranking of the top ten Scottish “take home” alcohol brands based on sales value, with Tennent’s Lager finding itself in the top position. It was followed, in order, by Glens Vodka, Famous Grouse, Whyte & Mackay, Bells Whisky, Grants Whisky, Mcewan’s, Drambuie, Isle of Jura and Brewdog.

Claire Arnott, head of UK customer marketing at Tennent’s, said this has been an “outstanding year for Tennent’s in the off-trade and what a way to round it off by becoming Scotland’s top-selling alcohol brand. Tennent’s Lager is a brand that consumers know, love and will always look out for… We have some exciting plans for Tennent’s Lager in the off-trade for the year ahead, so we look forward to 2018 and growing on the success from 2017.”
