Scottish steel group in major green projects

- By MARTIN FLANAGAN

The parent group of Scottish steelmaker Liberty House is poised to launch a three-year £700 million investment in renewable power.

GFG Alliance, which says it aims to get the group up to one Gigawatt of renewable energy capacity over the period, will make the investment through its Simec energy arm.

The privately held business is expected to announce this week a £35m investment to expand its existing hydro pow- er generation facilities around its aluminium plant at Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands.

A second deal to buy another green energy supplier is expected later in the week. Liberty House, which owns the Dalzell and Clydebridge steel plants, and Simec work together to deliver GFG’S selfstyled “greensteel strategy”.

A company spokesman told The Scotsman: “With the publication of the government’s industrial strategy, we are pleased that public policy is going in the same direction as us.”
