Toulouse-lautrec and Paris arrive in capital
The origins of celebrity culture in 19th century Paris will take centre stage in the first major Scottish exhibition devoted to French printmaker Henri de Toulouse-lautrec. The Scottish National Gallery show will recall the impact of the bohemian cabaret scene focused on venues like Le Moulin Rouge and Chat Noir.
Dozens of the artist’s posters, prints and and illustrations of stars including Yvette Guilbert, Jane Avril and Aristide Bruant will go on display.
Hannah Brocklehurst, curator of prints and drawings, said: “Paris was known as the ‘city of pleasure’ at this time. It has been mythologised over the years and has captured the public’s imagination.”
The NGS’S 2018 programme will also feature one of its biggest ever exhibitions devoted to Dutch master Rembrandt and a restrospective of Glasgow School of Art graduate Jenny Saville.
