A philanthropist, a theatre nurse and a charity worker have been honoured at a ceremony on behalf of the Queen.

William Mann, Elizabeth “Lily” Hendry and Cara O’donnell received their awards at Glasgow City Chambers yesterday.

Mr Mann, 83, from the city’s Kelvinside, received the CBE for his contribution to the sports, recreation, the arts and charity. The William Mann Foundation has given more than £2 million to charitable causes since it was set up in 1989.

Ms Hendry still works as a theatre scrub nurse at the Golden Jubilee Hospital at the age of 79. Ms Hendry, from Robroyston in Glasgow, receivedthebritishempire Medal (BEM) in recognition of her services to the Golden Jubilee Hospital.

The theatre nurse has also assisted at a burns and reconstruction clinic, orphanages and an Aids hospital in Africa.

Ms O’donnell, 29, received her BEM for services to charity after being involved since she was a teenager. She initially got involved in charitable work while at school and later volunteered at a club supporting children with additional support needs.

Glasgow Lord Provost Eva Bolander presented the trio with their awards.
