Space sector helps drive £6bn boost to economy

The aerospace, defence and space sectors are worth £6.4 billion to the Scottish economy, with space making the largest single contributi­on, new data published today has revealed.

ADS, the trade associatio­n for the industries across the UK, has released its first Industry Facts and Figures guide for Scotland.

Itfoundtha­tthespaces­ector generates annual turnover of £2.5bn, compared to £2bn for aerospace and £1.9bn for defence. However, defence emerged as the biggest employer, with 11,400 workers compared to 7,200 for space and 7,700 for aerospace.

ADS Scotland added that its focus in the year ahead includes promoting global investment and export opportunit­ies, and working with industry to make sure Scottish firms “are prepared and well-placed to succeed after Brexit”.

ADS chief executive Paul Everitt said: “We will be working closely with companies in our sectors across Scotland to make sure they continue to enjoy the best possible conditions for business success.”
