Violence in Jerusalem sparked by US recognising city as Israeli capital
Paramedics evacuate an injured Palestinian youth protester during clashes with Israeli troops on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Ramallah. It followed protests against US president Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The announcement set off widespread protests by Palestinians who seek the city’s Israeli-annexed eastern sector as a capital.
Mr Trump has said his statement did not define the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem, but his move was seen by Palestinians as a sign of pro-israel bias. In response, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas said the US can no longer be a Middle East mediator.
