Cinderella

- Joyce Mcmillan

There’s plenty of noisy fun on this year’s Christmas show trail around Scotland; but with pure midwinter magic in short supply, this is the year to head for the Citizens’ Theatre, where multiple award-winning director Dominic Hill makes a thrilling job of Stuart Paterson’s great 1989 version of Cinderella. There’s wonderful design and music, a lovely pantomime dog, and a superbly Kelvinside wicked stepmother, brilliantly played by Irene Allan; but with Sinead Sharkey acting up a storm as the dauntless heroine, love is the real magic here – the love between Cinderella and her lost mother, and the love she begins to feel for, well... not quite the Prince we expected. n Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow, until 31 December, 0141-429 0022
