Vandal destroys tributes as family marks a year since man’s death

- By ANDY SHIPLEY

A memorial to an Edinburgh man who was killed during a night out was trashed – just hours after it was unveiled.

A man was caught on CCTV destroying a tribute to Shaun Woodburn near where he was felled by a single punch.

Family and friends gathered in Leith on New Year’s Day to lay flowers and a ban- ner 12 months on from the young father’s death. But in the early hours of yesterday morning a vandal wrecked the messages, prompting fury from Shaun’s friends.

“He’s just scum,” said owner of nearby Gladstones Bar Peter Swanson, a close friend of Shaun’s dad, Kevin Woodburn. “He’s put the boot into Kevin and his family.”

Mr Swanson said footage captured on security cam- eras at Gladstones, where Shaun, 30, had been partying the night he was killed, clearly shows the culprit. The man is seeing staggering towards the tribute at 1:24am before launching his attack.

Mr Swanson added: “He ripped the banner off the wall and left with it. He’s kicked the flowers all over the street.

“He was steaming [drunk] and fell to the floor for ten seconds.”

Shaun died after being punched by a 16-year-old outside Gladstones bar in the early hours of 1 January, 2017.

The former Bonnyrigg Rose defender had been seeing in the New Year at the bar with family and friends, including Hibs star Danny Swanson, Peter’s nephew. His killer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was part of a gang attacking strangers across the city. 0 Fresh tributes to Shaun were in place soon after the attack
