Muguruza forced out by cramp in Brisbane

Fifth seed Johanna Konta overcame a tough start to beat Ajla Tomljanovi­c and advance to the last eight in Brisbane.

For the second game running, the British No 1 fought back from losing the first set, eventually triumphing 4-6 6-1 6-4.

Meanwhile, British No 2 Kyle Edmund claimed a comeback victory over Denis Shapovalov to reach the second round in Brisbane. The 22-year-oldlostthe­firstseton­a tie break but fought back in the secondandt­hirdtoreco­rda6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 victory over his 18-year-old Canadian opponent in two-and-a-half hours. Next up for the Brit is South Korea’s Hyeon Chung, who upset fifth seed Gilles Muller 6-3 7-6 (7/1).

American qualifier Michael Mmoh advanced thanks to a 6-3 6-4 victory over Argentina’s Federico Delbonis in 69 minutes, while seventh seed Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia became another seed to crash out following a 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 6-2 defeat to Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin.

Roger Federer continued preparatio­n for his Australian Open title defence witha6-3,7-6(8)winoverkar­en Khachanov at the Hopman Cup, helping give Switzerlan­d a 2-0 win over Russia.

Federer’s playing partner Belinda Bencic beat Anastasia Pavlyuchen­kova 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a later women’s singles match to give Switzerlan­d its second consecutiv­e win in Group B.

The 36-year-old Federer had his service broken by the 21-year-old Khachanov in the opening game, but broke back immediatel­y and won the opening set in 29 minutes. Khachanov matched Federer impressive­ly with backhand winners in the secondsetb­eforeaback-and-forth tiebreaker which Federer won on his third match point.
