Peterhead thrash Elgin 7-0 and close in on League 2 summit as Montrose are held by Cowdenbeath

-

Peterhead moved ever closer to the top of League 2 after a 7–0 crushing success over Elgin City at Balmoor.

Only a Rory Mcallister free-kick separated the sides at half-time, but, after Jordon Brown, pictured, and Nicky Riley had fired home in the first 20 minutes of the second half, the floodgates opened. Jamie Stevenson added the fourth from a dead ball before cracking in the fifth with Mason Robertson and Russell Mclean adding to the Blue Toon’s tally before the end.

Montrose, who have played two games more, are now only a point ahead after bottom side Cowdenbeath hit back to earn a 1-1 draw at Links Park.

Gary Fraser’s close-range header midway through the second half looked to be keeping the points in Angus but the Fife side equalised ten minutes from time when Robbie Buchanan found the net from a couple of yards out.

Stenhousemuir consolidated third place with a 2–1 Ochilview triumph over Stirling Albion.

Martin Scott edged the Warriors in front two minutes after the restart and Ross Meechan quickly added a second with a shot from 20 yards out. Darren Smith’s injurytime goal was too little and too late for the Forthbank men.

Clyde manager Danny Lennon secured the fourth consecutive goalless draw in the league since taking over with Annan leaving Broadwood with a point.

The Bully Wee looked good for Lennon’s first goal and first win when Jack Brannan was dismissed after seven minutes but they could not build up a head of steam and their skipper Kevin Nicoll saw red with four minutes left.

Edinburgh City’s recently appointed boss james mcdonagh did taste maiden success with a 3-0 win over visitors Berwick Rangers.

Ashley Grimes netted in the first half and Scott Shepherd hit a second-half double.
