Driving a point

-

I write with reference to Alastair Dalton’s article “Glasgow trains first in UK to be staff free” (3 June). He says that the Glasgow subway “is poised to be the first in the UK to use driverless trains”. Strictly speaking this is incorrect. The London Docklands Light Railway has used driverless trains from its opening in 1987, and it has since been extended to become quite a complex system. It is true the trains on the Docklands Light Railway are staffed by a Passenger Service Agent for safety reasons, but these staff do not drive the trains. It would appear from the article that a similar arrangement may unfold in Glasgow. JOHN GORDON-WALKER Caiystane Drive, Edinburgh
