Muir enjoys golden start to indoor season with 3,000m win in Glasgow

European champion Laura Muir made a pleasing start to her indoor season yesterday, winning the Scottish 3,000 metres title at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

Using the GAA Miler Meet to kickstart her preparations for the World Indoors in Birmingham in March, Muir claimed gold in a time of 8 minutes 37.21 seconds – which was only a couple of seconds slower than the time she recorded when winning European gold in Belgrade last March.

For the veterinary medicine student (who is missing the Commonwealth Games in Australia because of her exam schedule), yesterday’s victory represented her second Scottish gold medal in as many months, after she also won the Lindsays 4K title at a cross country at Kirkcaldy in November.

“I am pleased with that for a start to the indoor season and it is about working towards March now for the World Indoors,” said Muir.

“The first kilometre felt a bit fast and I paid for that a bit more later on. I’d have liked to have run a wee bit faster but it is a decent start and it sets me up for other events coming up.

“I’m juggling things with my final year at uni, of course, and there’s a strong chance I will be taking my books to the World Indoors for the last bit of studying for my vet finals!”

Muir was running her 3,000m in the same race as the men, and her training partner Sol Sweeney took the men’s gold with a PB of 8.19.03. The Glasgow University student saw off the challenge of second-placed Daniel Mooney and bronze medallist James Donald.
