Menzieshill power play keeps them in top spot

- By CRAIG MADDEN

Grove Menzieshill were in devastating form as their aggressive power play swept aside both Hillhead and Clydesdale leaving the unbeaten Taysiders top of the indoor first division at the end of the first part of the championship.

The champions’ 21 goals in the two outings came from a variety of sources, but again it was Albert Rowling who topped the list with a half dozen.

The Dundonians finished fivepointsaheadofsecondplaced Bromac Kelburne, who dropped two points in a curious 6-6 draw with Dundee Wanderers. The Paisley side were in total command with a 6-1 lead, but with seven minutes left the wheels then came off as four goals from Fergus Sandison and one from Francis Mulgrew wiped out the advantage.

Kelburne also lived dangerously in their earlier encounter with Clydesdale who led 7-6 with two minutes left, but a belated set-piece double by Josh Cairns rescued the three points.

Inverleith put together a winning run of five games to finish in third spot, only a point adrift of Kelburne. The Edinburgh side thumped Clydesdale 8-2 and Hillhead 7-3.

Dundee Wanderers leapfrogged Clydesdale into the top four following a 7-5 win over Grange. But Grange did record their first win of the competition after seeing off Edinburgh University 6-3.

Edinburgh University retained pole position in the pool and also their unbeaten record after drawing 2-2 with Grove in the women’s first division championships, a result that guaranteed them a place in next weekend’s semi-finals.

Edinburgh University consolidated top spot with a 5-2 victory over capital neighbours CALA in their second match.

Dundee Wanderers continued to dominate the other pool with victories over Milne Craig Clydesdale Western (5-1) and Kelburne (8-2). Western recovered sufficiently to see off Hillhead 7-1 and have almost certainly booked their semi-final spot.
