- By CRAIG P STEWART

Table-topping Montrose returned to winning ways after a two-game absence as they saw off Annan 1-0 at Galabank to keep chasers Peterhead at bay.

The Gable Endies came close after 12 minutes when Paul Watson headed against the bar before Lewis Milne came up with the game’s decisive moment six minutes from the interval when he cracked a fierce shot home from 25 yards.

Links Park boss Stewart Petrie, pictured, said: “It was important to get winning again after losing to Peterhead and drawing with Cowdenbeath. It was a special goal from Lewis on only his second outing with us.”

Peterhead remain firmly on Montrose’s tail after a 4-1 success over third-placed Stenhousemuir at Ochilview. The Warriors took the lead on 28 minutes through Mark Mcguigan’s penalty but the Blue Toon equalised in firsthalf injury time when Rory Mcallister netted from the spot.

Mcallister edged Peterhead in front early in the second half with headers from Mason Robertson and Russell Mclean completing the job.

Stirling Albion returned to the top four thanks to a 2-0 success over Berwick Rangers at Forthbank, with Darren Smith netting in each half.

Elgin City shrugged off their 7-0 defeat from Peterhead on Tuesday to defeat visitors Clyde 2-1.

Brian Cameron’s header from a Jordan Allan cross separated the sides at half-time, with the Bully Wee drawing level midway through the second half when David Goodwillie found the net after a poor clearance.

The hosts won the day when Chris Dodd scored three minutes from time from an Ali Sutherland corner.

At the foot of the table, Edinburgh City took a step away from trouble when they defeated Cowdenbeath 2-0 at Central Park.

Scott Shepherd opened the scoring from eight yards seven minutes from the interval and with the Blue Brazil still reeling from the blow, Pat Scullion, recently signed from Berwick Rangers, quickly added the second.
