Mexico 86 lighter among rubbish found on beach

A cigarette lighter made for the Fife World Cup in Mexico in 1986 was among the rubbish cleared from a beach in the Highlands.

Organisations Plasticatbay and Durness Active Health did the beach clean at Balnakeil, near Durness, in Sutherland, over the festive period.

Lotion bottles from Russia and jam containers from Newfoundland in Canada were also among the 204kg of litter tidied away.

Plasticatbay said the Mexico 86 lighter was significant because it showed how resilient plastic in the environment is.
