Only abattoir on Orkney gets cut by local council
The only abattoir on Orkney is set to be shut.
Orkney Island Council said it had spent about £1 million on the facility at Hatston since 2012 in an effort to keep it open.
They blamed maintenance costs and the availability of technical staff for the decision to cut funding.
The abattoir had been processing about 50 animals a month. They will now be shipped 150 miles south to Dingwall for slaughter.
