England’s top peak to be ‘rededicated’
The National Trust has unveiled plans to rededicate the “world’s greatest war memorial” in Scafell Pike and a dozen other Lake District summits given to the charity after the First World War.
England’s highest mountain was gifted to the trust by landowner Lord Leconfield in 1919. A further 12 Lake District peaks were donated in 1923.
The trust is now planning a series of commemorations “rededicating” the mountains, includingrebuildingasummit cairn on Scafell Pike.
