Davidson doesn’t let Boris feud lie
Ruth Davidson has stood by her claim that Boris Johnson “lied” about a £350 million-aweek Brexit windfall during the EU referendum campaign after the Foreign Secretary doubled down on the controversial figure.
Mr Johnson claimed the official Vote Leave campaign could have used a higher figure as the UK’S gross contribution would rise to £438m by 2021, the last year of an expected transition period. He claimed Britain’s contribution to the EU budget was already at £362m a week. 0 Ruth Davidson stood by her accusation of lying
Mr Johnson told The Guardian: “There was an error on the side of the bus. We grossly underestimated the sum over which we would be able to take back control.”
Asked whether she still believed Mr Johnson was lying, Ms Davidson said: “Well look, he’s a member of the cabinet and he gets to see the Treasury’s books.
“I’m not a member of government and I don’t. But my understanding from as many economists and government watchers that were there at the time was that I was correct in what I said when I was on the stage at Wembley debating it.”
Facing Mr Johnson in a televised debate in 2016, the Scottish Tory leader said: “You’re being asked to make a decision on Friday that’s irreversible, you can’t change it, and you’re being sold it on a lie.”
