Food bank politics: First Minister’s welfare system call

-

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon took time out to talk to volunteer worker Amy Mcbride as she visited the Start Up Stirling food bank in Stirling.

During the visit Ms Sturgeon urged Esther Mcvey, MP, the new work and pension secretary, to scrap the “failing” Universal Credit system.

“The rising use of food banks, with charities like Start Up Stirling forced to step in and provide support, is symptomatic of a broken welfare state. It is abundantly clear that the Universal Credit system is failing those it is designed to support,” Ms Sturgeon said.
