Nine-man Chelsea beat Norwich on penalties

-

Premier League champions Chelsea needed extratime and penalties to beat Championship Norwich in their FA Cup third-round replay at Stamford Bridge last night.

Chelsea finished the 120 minutes with nine men, with Pedro and Alvaro Morata having both been sent off late on. Penalties from Willian, David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta, N’golo Kante and Eden Hazard took Chelsea through to a fourth-round home tie against Newcastle.

Norwich had equalised in the fourth and final minute of injury time in normal time through a Jamal Lewis header after Michy Batshuayi had put the Blues ahead ten minutes after half-time with a close-range finish.

League One leaders Wigan caused another FA Cup upset as the 2013 winners beat Premier League side Bournemouth 3-0 in their third-round replay.

Latics, who stunned Manchester City in the final five years ago and then beat the same opposition in the quarter-finals in 2014, led early through Sam Morsy before substitute Dan Burn and defender Callum Elder struck in quick succession in the second period.

It was Bournemouth that Wigan beat in a thirdround replay when they won the competition and Paul Cook’s men, unbeaten in 13, now host West Ham.

Wilfried Bony scored the winner as Swansea earned a morale-boosting 2-1 win over Wolves.

It means Carlos Carvalhal’s men join Cardiff and Newport in the fourth round, only the third time three Welsh teams have reached that stage in the competition’s history.

Jordan Ayew opened the scoring in the thirdround replay and, although Wolves substitute Diogo Jota levelled the scores, Bony came up with the winner to ensure the home side secured a tie at League Two promotion contenders Notts County.
