Warnings of ice and snow have been extended into the weekend when temperatures are expected to plunge once more.

The Met Office has issued a new series of yellow – “be aware” – severe weather warnings which continue until tomorrow.

Temperatures are then forecast to dip tomorrow night to -6C in places like Braemar, -4C in Glasgow and -3C in Edinburgh.

It was -7C at Loch Glascarnoch, near Garve in the Highlands on Wednesday night, while Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway recorded 36cm of lying snow.

The Met Office said by the end of today up to another 30cm of snow may fall on the highest routes and 3-7cm at low levels.

It said more drivers could be stranded, after more than 200 were trapped on the M74 on Tuesday night, while strong winds threaten blizzards of drifting snow.

The warning extends as far east as Edinburgh, with just the east coast and the Northern and Western Isles escaping.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Travel delays on roads

“Motorists will potentially face significant delays at peak times”
